# How to Choose Kitchen Cabinets: A Homeowner's Guide for Rockland County Cabinets are typically 35–45% of a kitchen renovation budget and the single most visible element in the finished space. Making the right cabinet decision — for your budget, your home's style, and your long-term satisfaction — is the most important part of the design process. This guide gives you the framework to choose confidently. ## Cabinet Types: Stock, Semi-Custom, and Custom **Stock cabinets** are fully pre-built and available for immediate delivery in fixed sizes (typically in 3-inch increments, 9 to 48 inches wide). Finish options are limited to what is in stock at that moment. Brands like IKEA and Home Depot's Hampton Bay are stock cabinet lines. Stock cabinets are appropriate for very budget-constrained projects where speed matters more than fit. **Semi-custom cabinets** are the most popular choice for Rockland County renovations. Built to order (typically 4–8 week lead time) in a wide range of sizes (often in 1.5 or 3-inch increments) with extensive door style, finish, and interior accessory options. You get far better fit and far more choices than stock, without the price premium of custom. Our showroom carries Fabuwood, Ultracraft, and KraftMaid lines — all semi-custom. **Custom cabinets** are built to exact dimensions specified by the designer, with unlimited configuration options. True custom cabinets (built by a custom cabinet shop, not a large manufacturer's "custom" line) are appropriate for very unusual spaces, high-end projects, and situations where the cabinet design is itself the focal point. Lead time is typically 10–16 weeks. For most Rockland County kitchens — standard rectangles in colonials, ranches, and split-levels — semi-custom cabinets deliver an excellent result at a reasonable cost. ## Door Styles The door style is the most immediately visible aesthetic choice: **Shaker** — recessed center panel with a flat frame. The most popular style in Rockland County for the past decade. Works in transitional, traditional, and even contemporary settings depending on the finish. Available in painted, stained, and two-tone combinations. **Flat panel (slab)** — no frame, no raised or recessed panel — just a flat door. Contemporary, clean, and increasingly popular. Requires very precise installation because there are no design details to hide minor alignment issues. Works best in modern or minimalist kitchens. **Raised panel** — a center panel that is physically elevated above the frame. Classic traditional look. Common in homes built before 2000. Less popular in new installations but still appropriate for traditional and colonial-style homes. **Inset** — the door sits flush inside the frame (rather than overlapping it). A craftsman or furniture-grade look that signals high quality. Requires tight manufacturing tolerances and more precise installation. Available in semi-custom and custom lines. Adds 15–25% to cabinet cost but dramatically elevates the finished look. ## Construction: What Matters Inside the Box The box itself — the cabinet carcass — is where quality differences show up over 20 years: **Plywood boxes** (3/4" plywood sides, back, and shelves) are the industry benchmark. Strong, resistant to humidity and moisture, and less susceptible to warping and delamination. Most semi-custom and all custom cabinets use plywood boxes. **Particleboard boxes** are heavier, weaker, and more susceptible to moisture damage than plywood. More common in lower-cost stock cabinet lines. Acceptable in dry locations but problematic in kitchens where steam, humidity, and occasional water exposure are normal. **Dovetail drawer boxes** (solid wood sides joined with a dovetail joint) are the benchmark for drawer construction. The joint is self-locking and extremely durable. Doweled or stapled drawer boxes are less durable over repeated use. **Full-extension, soft-close drawer glides** — full extension means the drawer slides all the way out for full access to the drawer contents. Soft close means the drawer decelerates and closes gently under any condition. These are standard on all semi-custom cabinets we carry. ## Finishes **Painted** — the most popular finish in Rockland County. White, off-white (Linen, Antique White), gray, sage green, navy, and two-tone combinations. Painted finishes show fingerprints more easily than stained wood but offer crisp, clean lines. Top-quality cabinet manufacturers apply a catalyzed conversion varnish (not latex paint) that is extremely durable and washable. **Stained wood** — natural wood grain with a color stain applied. Warm, traditional look. Popular in maple, cherry, and alder species. Disguises minor scratches better than painted finishes. More forgiving in kitchens with heavy use. **Thermofoil / laminate** — a vinyl film or high-pressure laminate wrapped over an MDF door. Budget-friendly, very washable, no painting or staining. The film can delaminate over time, particularly near heat sources. Acceptable in lower-budget projects. ## Interior Accessories Worth Considering The cabinet boxes are just containers — the accessories inside make them functional: - **Pull-out trash and recycling drawers** — essential for any kitchen renovation - **Pull-out trays behind lower cabinet doors** — far more accessible than fixed shelves - **Spice pull-outs** inside base and upper cabinets - **Tray dividers** for baking sheets and cutting boards - **Lazy Susans** for corner cabinets (or blind corner pull-outs for cleaner access) - **Roll-out shelves** in pantry cabinets - **Charging drawers** with integrated USB outlets ## Visit Our Congers Showroom Before You Decide Our 2,400 sq ft showroom at 437 N Route 9W in Congers features full-size kitchen vignettes in multiple door styles, finishes, and configurations.
