# How to Identify High-Quality Cabinets

The most useful skill when evaluating cabinets in a showroom is knowing what to open, pull, and push before you look at the finish. Cabinet photographs and finish samples tell you almost nothing about structural quality — the parts that determine how the cabinets look and function in five years. A systematic physical inspection of a sample cabinet takes less than two minutes and tells you most of what you need to know.

## Start with the decision behind the detail

Start with the box: open a base cabinet and knock on the side panel. A hollow sound indicates particleboard; a denser sound indicates plywood or MDF. Look at the corner joints — finger-jointed or glued corners are weaker than mortise-and-tenon or cam-lock with confirmat screws. Open a drawer and look at the corner joints: dovetail joints indicate a higher-quality drawer box; stapled or glued corners indicate a lower tier. Pull the drawer out fully and observe how it returns — soft-close undermount slides are the current quality standard; side-mount metal slides are adequate but represent a lower investment. Open a cabinet door and observe the hinge: six-way adjustable European hinges are standard quality; fixed hinges are a cost-cut. Press the finish surface with your fingernail — quality catalyzed finishes resist minor scratching; thin film finishes will mark. Finally, look at the inside of the cabinet: unfinished interiors are common even on high-end cabinets, but the material should be smooth and consistent without voids.

## Questions worth answering before you choose

- **Box material test: knock on the panel — plywood sounds denser than particleboard**
- **Drawer joint inspection: dovetail joints indicate significantly higher construction quality**
- **Slide quality: undermount soft-close slides outperform side-mount slides in daily use**
- **Hinge test: six-way adjustability allows alignment correction after installation**
- **Finish hardness: press with a fingernail — quality lacquer resists light marking**

## Put the choice in the context of your home

Cabinetry and countertop decisions work best when they are considered with your layout, lighting, household routine, and the condition of the surrounding room. A sample can look entirely different under the lighting in your home, and a feature that looks right on a display may not solve the storage or workflow issue you are trying to fix. Rockland Design Factory helps homeowners across the tri-state area compare options in person and leave with a clear scope instead of a collection of disconnected ideas.
