# Materials Used in Custom Cabinetry Explained

The phrase 'custom cabinetry' describes a production method, not a single material. Custom shops select from dozens of wood species, substrate types, and finish systems to build what a designer specifies. That flexibility is the point — but it also means you can unknowingly approve a spec that costs more without performing better, or approve one that saves money at a meaningful quality cost. A brief vocabulary review makes it much easier to read a cabinet specification sheet with confidence.

## Start with the decision behind the detail

Cabinet components fall into three categories: the box (carcass), the door and drawer fronts, and the interior fittings. Boxes are typically built from plywood, MDF, or particleboard. Plywood holds screws well and resists moisture better than particleboard; MDF paints smoothly and machines cleanly but is heavier and more vulnerable to water. Door fronts are usually solid wood, MDF, or a combination (solid wood frame with MDF center panel). Solid-wood frames move with humidity and are prone to cracking if the panel is glued; a floating panel accommodates that movement. For painted finishes, MDF doors often outperform solid wood because they do not telegraph wood grain or move as much seasonally. Interior fittings — rollout trays, drawer boxes, dividers — are often birch plywood or a secondary wood species. Finish systems range from catalyzed lacquer (very durable, low VOC when properly applied) to conversion varnish and water-based topcoats.

## Questions worth answering before you choose

- **Plywood carcass: better screw retention and moisture resistance than particleboard at a cost premium**
- **MDF door fronts: ideal for painted finishes; avoid in high-humidity areas without proper sealing**
- **Solid-wood frame with floating panel: handles seasonal movement without cracking**
- **Interior secondary wood: birch plywood is the standard; ask what grade is used inside drawers**
- **Finish system: catalyzed lacquer and conversion varnish offer the best hardness and cleanability**

## Put the choice in the context of your home

Cabinetry and countertop decisions work best when they are considered with your layout, lighting, household routine, and the condition of the surrounding room. A sample can look entirely different under the lighting in your home, and a feature that looks right on a display may not solve the storage or workflow issue you are trying to fix. Rockland Design Factory helps homeowners across the tri-state area compare options in person and leave with a clear scope instead of a collection of disconnected ideas.
