Kitchen Cabinet Types: Construction and Customization

Cabinet categories describe different attributes. Stock, semi-custom, and custom concern specification and production options; framed and frameless concern box construction; inset and overlay describe how the door relates to the cabinet. They are not six mutually exclusive quality grades.

Stock, semi-custom, and custom

Stock cabinets use a defined size and finish offering. Semi-custom starts with a line's sizes and permitted modifications. Custom can address non-standard dimensions or details, subject to the maker's actual specification. Verify the particular line's options, current production schedule, and complete proposal instead of assigning a universal price or lead-time range to a category.

Framed and frameless boxes

A framed cabinet has a face frame attached to the box. A frameless cabinet attaches its hardware and doors to the box structure without that face frame. Compare usable openings, hardware, box specifications, and installation requirements on the proposed products. Construction type alone does not establish quality.

Inset and overlay doors

Inset doors sit within the frame opening; overlay doors cover part or most of the face. Door fit, reveal consistency, hinge selection, and room conditions matter. Ask which combinations are offered by the specific line and review a physical display or sample.

Base, wall, and tall cabinet functions

The same customization and construction categories can appear in base units, wall cabinets, pantry units, and appliance housings. Confirm depth, height, width, shelves, drawer arrangements, accessories, and clearances from the measured layout.

Compare specifications, not labels

Record box material, drawer construction, hinges, slides, finish, panels, fillers, trim, delivery, design, installation, and exclusions. Compare cabinet quotes, review the measurement guide, and bring appliance specifications to a design consultation.
