Project Story

The Garnerville homeowners had a fiberglass shower insert that was cracked along the floor pan and had delaminated at two of the corners — a common failure point in older inserts. They had been dealing with it for over a year and finally decided to do it properly: rip out the insert and replace it with a fully custom tile shower.

This type of project is one of our favorites. It's focused, the scope is defined, and the results are dramatic compared to what was there before.

After removing the fiberglass insert and the old shower pan, we rebuilt the shower floor with a mortar base sloped to a linear drain, then applied a full Schluter Kerdi waterproofing membrane over the walls and floor. This is the right way to do a tile shower — completely waterproof before any tile goes up.

The tile is a 12×24 sand-toned porcelain on the walls, floor-to-ceiling, with a matching 2-inch mosaic on the shower floor. We built a custom mortar bench seat along one wall and a built-in double niche. The linear drain recessed into the floor gives a sleek, minimal look.

A frameless glass panel in matte black hardware and a Moen Genta LX system with a 10-inch rain head and handheld complete the shower. Permits with Haverstraw Building Department. Completed in 2.5 weeks.
