The homeowners in this West Nyack raised ranch hadn't used the bathtub in years — they were purely shower people. When the tub surround started delaminating and the faucet began leaking, they decided it was the right time to convert to a walk-in shower they'd actually use and enjoy.
The old tub was removed and the plumbing rough-in was relocated to accommodate a larger, more accessible shower footprint. Before any tile went up, we installed a full Schluter Kerdi waterproofing membrane system behind the walls and a custom mortar shower base — the right way to do a shower that won't leak.
The shower tile is a 12×24 light gray porcelain, full floor-to-ceiling. The shower floor uses a 12×12 gray hex tile for grip and a subtle visual change. We built in a double niche shelf for shampoo and soap, and a built-in bench seat on one end for comfort.
A 10-inch rain shower head plus a handheld on a slide bar give flexibility. The frameless glass enclosure opens the space visually and makes cleaning easier. Permits were filed with Clarkstown Building Department for the plumbing work. Completed in 3 weeks.
