How to Check a Remodeling Contractor's Scope and Credentials

Editorially reviewed planning guidance. Sources establish only the claims identified; confirm current product and project terms before committing.

Choose a remodeling contractor by checking the proposed work, the business identity and the documents that apply to your property. A friendly consultation or an attractive gallery is useful context, but neither replaces a written scope, current credential checks or insurance documentation.

Match the contractor to the agreement

Ask which legal entity will sign the contract and perform the work. Compare that identity with the supplied license and insurance documents. Ask the issuing authority about the current status, permitted classifications, restrictions and expiration date. Do not assume that a credential in one jurisdiction authorizes every trade or work in another state.

What the RDF certificate photograph supports

The preserved Rockland County certificate photograph displays CRH-24014, issued to Rockland County NY Handy Man Services LLC, effective January 9, 2026 and expiring January 9, 2027. It prints the restriction “NO SUBCONTRACTORS” and classifications for doors, windows and awnings, finish carpentry and rough carpentry. The image is documentary evidence of the printed certificate, not a live status check or evidence of insurance.

The existing site also references a differently formatted registry number. That discrepancy remains unresolved. Review the certificate and verification information and confirm current status directly with the county before relying on it. This guide does not claim New Jersey or Connecticut credentials, bonding or insurance coverage.

Evaluate the proposal and project examples

Request a scope that identifies products, quantities, responsibilities, exclusions, allowances and how changes are approved. Ask who is responsible for permits and any separately regulated trade work. Discuss how the proposed staffing complies with applicable license restrictions rather than assuming every staffing arrangement is permitted.

When looking at photos, ask whether they show a completed project, a showroom display or a design reference. Do not infer a project address, budget or completion date from an image. If customer references are offered, ask what work was performed and whether it is comparable to your own scope.

Keep the records together

Before committing, retain the signed proposal, product selections, payment terms, change procedure and written warranty. Ask for current insurance evidence and clarify claim contacts. A claim in an old article is not a substitute for those documents.
