Countertop Material, Fabrication and Templating Checklist

Editorially reviewed planning guidance. Sources establish only the claims identified; confirm current product and project terms before committing.

Choose a countertop by comparing the actual product, fabrication plan and care instructions. Names such as quartz, granite, marble, soapstone, concrete, laminate, tile or stainless steel are starting points for questions, not a complete specification. A material category alone does not establish suitability, price, maintenance or availability through a particular showroom.

Compare what you will live with

Ask the supplier for written guidance on heat exposure, spills, cleaners, surface protection and any sealing or refinishing requirements for the exact product. Record which routine you are willing to follow. Do not assume that a material is maintenance-free or use a generic cleaning recommendation in place of manufacturer instructions.

View the proposed slab, sheet, sample or tile selection as appropriate. Ask what variation is expected between a sample and the installed surface, and how pattern, colour or veining will be approved. Combine the surface sample with your cabinet finish, backsplash and floor choices before approving the palette.

Resolve the fabrication details

Request a drawing showing seams, edge profiles, exposed ends, sink and cooktop cutouts and any backsplash pieces. Ask the fabricator to identify support requirements for overhangs and appliances. This article does not specify spans or structural support: those decisions depend on the selected product and the qualified installer’s instructions.

Clarify who supplies the sink, who verifies the appliance specifications and who is responsible for plumbing disconnection and reconnection. Record delivery access, removal of the old surface, disposal and protection of surrounding finishes. A supply-only price may not include those activities.

Prepare for templating without guessing

Ask the fabricator what must be installed or available before the template appointment. Confirm the cabinet installation status, required fixtures and approval of cutout information. Ask how a change after templating affects the work and cost. Do not assume a fixed number of days between measuring and installation; obtain a project-specific sequence.

Compare countertop proposals using the same material, area, edge and cutout requirements. Keep allowances separate from selected products. Use the quote comparison guide for the broader kitchen scope and ask for all exclusions in writing.
